- In Search of the Red Knots - May 12, 2012
On Saturday, May, 12th, we took a ride down Route 47 to Cape May. We stopped at several beaches along the Delaware Bay looking for Red Knots. Throughout our ride, we encountered teams participating in the 29th Annual World Series of Birding. After a few disappointing stops, we finally found some Red Knots, as well as many other scenic and interesting sites!

- The Fishing Expedition - April 13, 2012
I spotted this Osprey fishing from the air. By the time I got out of the car, he was getting ready to dive. As you look at the photos, you can see his "splash down" and the sequence of events that occurred as he tried to secure the fish. His catch was so large that the Osprey actually went under water more than once as it tried to take flight with the fish in its talons!
It eventually gets minimal air and needs more than 30 yards to clear the surface of the water. As you watch the photos, notice the turtles watching (their heads look like black dots in the water)! He finally gets to tree and spends the better part of an hour eating his fish.
What a way to spend nice, quiet hour!!!

- Chance Encounters
As we all know, the winter doesn't usually offer as many photographic opportunities as we might find in our area during the summer. However, so far, this winter has been the exception to the rule!
We wanted to share some of the "chance encounters" we have had this winter. Hopefully, they brighten your day and fill the gap until spring!

- Aftermath of Irene at Weymouth Furnace - August 29, 2011
The first six photos show the Great Egg Harbor River at Weymouth Furnace in October of 2010. The remainder show the same area today in the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. The last three photos are a little further down Weymouth Road (maybe one mile or so) just before the river turns and heads towards the Furnace.
- Surfing Irene - Friday, August 26, 2011
I took these photos at the Ventnor Fishing Pier between 11:15 & 12:00 Friday, August 26th. The swell report looked good, considering Irene was on the way, and I was hoping the waves would be bigger (I'm sure the surfers were too!). Even though they weren't the best waves we've ever seen prior to a hurricane, I think I got some really good photos!

As you can see, our little boys are growing up quickly! Pretty soon, they will be proper farm cats, catching mice and keeping everything under control around the house! But, for now, they are content with playing, sleeping, and being cute!

- We Are Published!!!
I wanted to spread the word...I had a photo published!
A few weeks ago, I was notified that I was in the running to be published in Adobe Photoshop Elements Techniques magazine. The magazine, along with their companion website photoshopelementsuser.com (with over 50,000 subscribers), is "devoted to helping PC and Mac users get the most out of Adobe Photoshop Elements." It is run by Photo One Media, a small company based in Portland, Oregon, and is published six times per year.
Throughout the year, I have submitted photos to the website and posted them in their gallery. Elements Village is a forum where photographers and users of Photoshop Elements go to learn new techniques, share ideas, and display photos showing the techniques discussed in the magazine. It is also where the magazine's editors look for distinguishing photos to be highlighted in their bi-monthly editions. Their email said, in part, "We've selected your image, as a finalist for the Subscriber Showcase in the next issue of Photoshop Elements Techniques magazine. This section is a place for subscribers to get recognized for their exceptional work, and yours was judged to be among the best posted on the Web site since the last issue."
Today, March 7th, I received my copy of the magazine and found out that my photo was in the "Subscriber Showcase" on page 34! Needless to say, I am extremely excited and proud to have been selected from the 1,000's of photos submitted each month from around the world to be featured in the magazine ! This is certainly an honor given the competition!
This photo, "Reflections in the Snow", was taken on December 27th after the big, post-Christmas snowstorm . I have to thank Mildred's sons, Michael and Robert, for their part in the photo. Michael's part involved plowing the driveway, thus giving the birds a place to find water (from the melting snow) and food (from where he pushed up the dirt). Robert gets the credit for spotting the cardinals when he went to the back door. He called to me to get my camera, and I took one shot through the door glass, but didn't like the clarity. I, then, decided to step out onto the porch to try and get a better shot. It was then that I able to get two more shots off before he flew away!
This, my first publication, is truly an inspiration for my continued endeavors in photography!

- February 6, 2010 Snowstorm...the last few hours
These photos showed the final few hours of the storm, with it dropping a projected two inches per hour. Thank goodness this part only lasted about two hours! Many of these photos show the blizzard conditions associated with this part of the storm. The last two photos were taken around 4:30pm, and you can see the brightening sky on the other side of the woods.

- 9. Awards
April 2012 - Plein Air Photography Contest - sponsored by the Hammonton Gazette and the Hammonton Arts Center - The theme was "a day in the life in Hammonton" and all photos had to be taken outside with natural light...no flash. We entered several photos and WON 1st PLACE for "Old and New" and an Honoralbe Mention for "Tile Barn"! Great job, Mildred!!!
April 2012 - Hammonton Arts Center's Annual Photography show was very kind to us! We entered four photos and all were recognized as follows: "Winter Glow" - 1st place - strictly digital category; "Freeze Frame" - 2nd place - print category; "Cruising Outside the Box" - Honorable Mention - print category; "Journey to the Center of the Daffodil" - Honorable Mention - strictly digital category!
2012 started out quiet, but we were just recognized with yet another "Image of the Week" runner-up on the Elements Village Gallery website! "Winter Glow" was the 1st photo we submitted this year, so things are looking up!
We've started out the new year of 2011 with the honor of a selection as runner up for Image of the Week on the Photoshop Elements Users website! Each time we are selected, we couldn't be more proud, as our photos are being recognized amongst 100's submitted each week and judged by our peers! We also received the honor of having our work, Reflection in the Snow, published in Adobe Photoshop Elements magazine in March/April, and won "Honorable Mention" for Reflection in the Snow and Botanical Bliss.
During 2010, we were featured on the ShutterFreaks website. We also won the "Editor's Choice" photo for the week of May 23-30, 2010 and again for June 7-13, 2010 on the Photoshop Elements Users website. July 5-12th garnered us two more "Editor's Choice" photos on the Photoshop Elements Users website, as well as two "Image of the Week" runner-up photos on the Elements Village Gallery website!
2009 was a great year for Photos by MK! In April, we entered three photographs into a juried photography show at the Hammonton Arts Center. The judge was Master Photographer Jack Mazzeo. We won "Best of Show" as well as an "Honorable Mention"! Our next recognition came in a mixed media floral show in June where we were awarded another "Honorable Mention". Perhaps the most exciting recognition, to date, is the win in the Palisades Highway Art Gallery contest. Over 940 pieces of art were submitted and voted on by the public. The winners, of which we are one of 13, had their work made into a billboard and displayed throughout the state of New Jersey! Our billboard was on Route 38 and Browning Road in Cherry Hill from August 17th through mid-September. In December, we were fortunate enough to win another Palisades photo contest, this one entitled, "What Drives your Holiday Smile?" Many thanks to everyone who voted for our photos!
